"Living the Spartan Life in the Land of Enchantment."

Although we're as diverse as can be, we share Michigan State University in common. A Spartan connection is an instant network of family and friends wherever MSU Alumni may be. If you're a graduate or friend of Michigan State University, living in New Mexico, welcome home.

MSU Soccer in NM this weekend

The Michigan State men’s soccer team will take part in the University of New Mexico Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. in its first road trip of the season this weekend. On Friday (Sept. 5), MSU will take on New Mexico at 9:30 p.m. EDT and will face off with UC-Davis at 3:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday (Sept. 7).

The Spartans are 1-1 on the season after defeating St. Francis (Pa.) 4-0 last Friday and falling to Vermont 2-1 on Sunday in the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic.

MSU/EMU 8/6/08 10AM ET - at Spectators

The feedback is in and we’re moving the headquarters for our Saturday football viewing to Spectators - 5850 Eubank Blvd NE - located in the Mountain Run shopping center.

We used to go to Spectators in the old days, but moved to Fox and Hound to escape the smokey environs. Now that New Mexico restaurants are smoke-free, we’re returning to our old haunts.

Join us this Saturday at 10AM as we watch MSU take on Eastern Michigan.

MSU/California 8/30/08 - 6PM MT - Fox & Hound

It’s that time of year. Mark Dantonio and team will be kicking off the 2008 season in our back yard, traveling to California this weekend. The game is on ABC at 8ET / 6MT. Although I will be traveling, our usual crowd will be gathering at Fox and Hound - I25 and Jefferson to worship at the Spartan shrine.

Here’s the 2008 Football Schedule.

Executive Director Search Update

Many of you know that since Keith Williams’ retirement, our association has been able lead by Bill Beekman.  Bill has done a terrific job beginning the implementation of our best practices findings and has attracted some outstanding new blood to the MSUAA organization. Here’s a note he circulated to our board announcing his future plans and providing an update on the search process for his successor.

MSUAA National Board Members:

This email includes several updates of importance.  First, for those of you who were unable to join us on the conference call on Friday, I announced that I have been asked by President Simon to join her immediate staff as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees and Executive Assistant to the President.  This job is currently held by Alison Barber, who will be returning to the faculty of the business college.  Those of you who know Alison, know how extraordinarily effective she is and how challenging it will be to fill her shoes.  Nevertheless, it presents an exciting opportunity for me to continue to work with on exciting issues within the university.  I will be leaving the alumni association on or about January 1, 2008.

As you know, we have begun a search for the next executive director of the alumni association.  We anticipate concluding that search on or about July 1, 2008, consistent with the timeline approved by all of you at our October meeting.  President Simon has appointed a search committee that includes:  Stella Cash, chair of the search committee; Bonnie Knutson, chair of the national board; Greg Hauser, incoming chair of the national board; Patrick McPharlin, CEO of the MSU Federal Credit Union; Carole Ames, Dean of the College of Education; Martin Jarmond, Assistant Athletic Director for Development; June Youatt, Senior Associate Provost; and Katie Copple, President of the Student Alumni Foundation.  In addition, Paulette Granberry Russell and I will be consultants to the committee.

We have hired Dennis Barden of Witt/Kieffer to serve as our search consultant.  The text below will appear in the alumni association magazine scheduled for delivery in late December.

Executive Director Search

The Michigan State University Alumni Association will soon begin searching for its next Executive Director.  A complete job description and background information will be available on January 15, 2008 at www.msualum.com/search.

Nominations and inquiries should be forwarded to the association’s search consultant, Dennis M. Barden, Senior Vice President, Witt/Kieffer, 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510, Oak Brook, IL 60523.  Phone: (630) 575-6167; Fax: (630) 990-1257; email: MSUAA@wittkieffer.com.

Between January 1 and July 1 of 2008 we will be without an executive director.  I am pleased to inform you that President Simon has asked Stella Cash to serve as the interim executive director during that time and that Stella has agreed to do so.

Finally, it is customary at this time of year that we email all of you to solicit nominations to serve on the executive committee of our national board.  While our bylaws have changed some of the names, that part of our process remains the same.  We are currently seeking nominations for individuals interested in serving as our vice-chairperson (with the presumption that the person become chair the following year), secretary, or treasurer.  Individuals interested in making a nomination of themselves, or of someone else, should provide that information to Bev VandenBerg at vanden15@alumni.msu.edu.  In the interest of moving this process along as expeditiously as possible, we are asking that all nominations be made by no later than Tuesday, December 18 at noon.
